Software For Light Design

topic posted Wed, April 13, 2005 - 8:16 AM by  Guitar
Hi everyone. I play lead guitar in a cover band called Phat Bastard (www.getphat.com) based out of Phoenix, Az. I have been painfully putting together a light show for us and we play different size bars, so we need some flexibility. Does anyone know of a software package that shows you lights as you place them (around drums, stage, etc) and that would give you some template ideas or something like that? Like a lighting theme or similiar?

Most of the software packages that I have found either do one of two things. (1) - Design the light show for programattic reasons (to hook up with DMX controllers and run the show). or (2) - Design light show with 3d rendering or information of the sort.

I really am not looking for either one of these. I just would like to be able to put something together for layout or as if you were looking towards the stage. Almost like a Visio template if you will.

Anyways, I'm not sure that I'm explaining this correctly, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanx, Bruce

Martin Light Jockey lets you have a lay out… no real ground plan, but you can position the fixture icons in a relative position.

        good luck, guitar.

Stage size changes - night to night - complicate the matter no end!

I suggest calling some big name LD's. If they arent working they will talk your ear off!!
If you cannot locate the numbers or emails of big name LD's call up any old lighting company. Ask for thier best LD's and pick the brain of each.

If they happen to know the low down of the clubs and ballrooms you will be working so much the better.

I have seen the show modelers work well.

But nothing beats practice. Even if it is in your driveway or bedroom.

I do free lance here in the valley and also mamaged a lighting company here. I have been in many clubs and many resorts and know th elayout of most of them all. If you need any assistance let me know. I also have operation experiance on most consoles so I can help with that to. good luck.
Like I always say, without lights a musican is just a speaker on stage.

ah....ok ive been doing lighting for twenty years and i pretty much can tell you about every program on the market

I can also tell you how to design a basic stage rig that can be used in lots of different venue shapes and sizes...because that is what I do for a living.

    so....zephyrslair@yahoo.com

cause this convo is a bit longer than one post, and I would really need to know what exactly u r trying to do and what size venues u r talking about in order to help you out.

    talk to ya later ;)

btw.....martin is a great program...but if you are not a lighting designer and not familiar with an autocadd type situation....it may not be user freindly and there may be easier ways to do what you want . ALso cheaper ways, since that is a professional program and martin gets good bucks for their software.

just some random thoughts.....hope it is useful

Most of the decent programs cost in the $500 + range BTW
if your just looking for a basic lighting plot drawing program try microlux
the demo is free but again it's an autocadd kind of learning curve
